President's Monthly Update October 2024

1. Carnival Success

The Fall Carnival on October 9th was a major success, with over 5,000 attendees enjoying the new arcade-style prize system and a variety of rides, including the Ferris wheel. The event featured popular attractions like photo booths, face painting, and henna artists, all of which contributed to the lively atmosphere. Thanks to the hard work of our Events Manager, Celyn Talaue, and the team, the event ran smoothly and exceeded expectations.

Please adhere to the VPSS report for a more detailed overview of the carnival. A huge kudos to the entire team for their creativity and hard work—it truly paid off, making this year’s carnival one of the most memorable events of the term.

Part of the new prize system was a raffle draw, the names were announced, emails were sent to the winners before reading week, prizes will be picked up by students this week.

Huge shoutout to Carleigh, Shinaya, Mark and Celyn for all their support and hard work!

2. OUSA General Assembly (GA)

We are thrilled to report that all preparations for the OUSA GA have been finalized. Everything is on track, and we’re excited to welcome all the schools arriving tomorrow.

It’s going to be a busy week for the executive team, but we’re ready and looking forward to productive discussions and collaboration with student leaders across Ontario.

A huge shoutout to Dave and the entire food and beverage team, to Celyn Talaue, Jessie Reid and Kayleigh Rossetto for their entire support throughout the planning process.

3. Meetings with Mayors and MPPs

Over the last two weeks, the executive team has made significant strides in strengthening relationships with local officials. Our meetings with mayors and MPPs have been crucial in establishing ongoing dialogues that help us in creating a vision both for students and the university.

For more detailed information on these meetings, please refer to the VPEA's board report.

5. Food First Letter Follow-up

We received an acknowledgment from Brad Clarke (Associate Vice-President, Students and

Acting Associate Vice-President, Equity, Diversity & Inclusion) on October 2nd, stating that the Food First letter had been received and that they would respond within 10 days.

After communication with the GSA, the GSA president followed up on the 8th day, expressing appreciation for their response and anticipation of the upcoming reply. However, we have yet to receive any further communication as of now.

6. New Student Centre

Our fourth meeting with the architect took place on October 8th , and we are pleased to report significant progress. The vision for the building is gradually coming to life, with each discussion bringing us closer to realizing this exciting new space for students.

As planned, we intend to present this project to the Brock Board of Trustees in December during the Cycle 2 meeting.

7. Senate Presentation

I am preparing to deliver a BUSU presentation at the Senate, USAC - in November. The planning for this presentation is well underway, and I’m working to ensure it reflects our key priorities and updates effectively.

8. Brock Strategic Plan

As mentioned in my earlier reports, the Brock Strategic Plan was successfully approved by both the Brock Board of Trustees and the Senate.

Carleigh, our VPUA, has played a pivotal role throughout this process, ensuring that student voices were represented and actively contributing to the development of the plan and made a significant impact on the outcome, and I want to acknowledge her hard work and commitment.

We are pleased to share that both Carleigh and I have been invited to attend the official launch of the Strategic Plan, which will take place on November 7th.

10. Fall Convocation

The Fall Convocation ceremonies went smoothly, as reported last month. Mark and Shinaya represented the executive team at the two ceremonies, and everything was well-executed, ensuring a memorable day for graduates and their families.

11. Marketing Communication with Students

Alongside BUSU Marketing & Events Director, Jessie Reid, we have revamped our approach to communication with students. To improve accessibility, we have established fixed office hours on designated days at two different locations, with two executives present at each. Additionally, we’ve introduced Instagram Lives every Monday, where we provide students with updates on the week's events and initiatives—something you may have already seen in action yesterday. These steps are aimed at enhancing engagement and keeping students informed in real-time.

12. Back from Reading Week

As we return from reading week, the executive team is back to the grind, refocusing on our initiatives and preparing for the busy weeks ahead. There’s a lot of exciting work in progress, and we’re ready to get back to work after a good break.

Upcoming:

We are meeting with the Brock Provost - Arja Vainio-Mattila, this is the first time the BUSU executive team will formally meet her, really looking forward to a great meeting!
