This November, Brock University Students’ Union (BUSU) will launch Food Security Week as part of the Food First program. This week-long initiative will include free food events for Brock students, a food drive, and fun informative games to bring awareness of the stresses related to food security for post-secondary students.
Food Security Week will run Nov. 11 to 14 and include a Free Taco Bar, The Grocery Game, Money Saver Bingo with Instagram influencer @livingonaloonie, and Free Mac n’ Cheese.
BUSU, along with their Food First partners the Brock Graduate Students' Association (GSA) will also host their regular Food First programs such as Grab & Go and Free Hot Breakfast throughout November. Hot breakfast is a free, monthly event that provides a full hot breakfast to fuel students for their day on campus. Free Grab & Go takes place weekly with quick nutritious snacks for students to grab on the way to class.
“The Food First program aims to ensure students can focus on their studies without the added worry of where their next meal is coming from,” said Carleigh Charlton, Vice-President, University Affairs. “Food First events provide free meals directly to students.”
BUSU and the GSA also encourage Brock faculty and staff to enjoy the Hot Breakfast on Nov. 7 in Union Station for a small donation of $2.
“A donation of just $2 from faculty and staff here at Brock goes a long way in helping students with food insecurity,” said Charlton. “These donations will help sustain the initiative, ensuring more students can benefit from this program in the future.”
BUSU along with Brock Graduate Students' Association (Brock GSA) as well as Brock International teamed up last June to provide students with free food options on campus with the Food First Pop-up Pantry.
BUSU also continues to collect nonperishable food items at their office in the Student-Alumni Centre for Food First Pop-up Pantry events. This service provides free nonperishable food items to stock the shelves of students in need.
